Shanghai Street
The best xiao long bao I’ve had in Australia from @shanghaistreet.melb
✨pork xiao long bao - $13.80
Okay so I am originally from Singapore so I do actually think I’m somewhat qualified to make this bold statement. Xiao long bao was always my favourite food before I came to Australia and I’ve never found any that live up my expectations.
Until this place. The thing that people struggle to perfect imo is the soup, but Shanghai street gets it perfectly flavourful. And look how steaming hot they arrived! The wrapper is also strong enough that they don’t break when you pick them up which is the saddest thing to happen when eating xiao long bao. Also the texture of the meat is great - that can really turn me off some places dumplings!
Their Chinatown location always has a line and I can see why. I went to their Elizabeth street location and it was done up beautifully. Would also highly recommend their pan fried mini pork buns!

Dumplings that brought me back to my childhood and to heaven concurrently.
✨ signature pan fried pork mini buns $14.80
It’s been years since I had a dumpling that truly made me sit back in awe and this finally did that for me. These dumplings do not rely on soy or vinegar or chilli to make them flavourful, in fact if anything they’re a hinderance to the exquisite broth these are filled with. I got these takeaway and they were still incredible so that says a lot. I will never order dumplings from anywhere else ever again.
Not pictured is the fried rice which was fine, pretty basic fried rice. Soy sauce was a good accompaniment to this one. It was also MASSIVE. Like I eat a lot of food and I only ate a 1/4 of this fried (if that). I think it could happily be an entire meal for 2 (although that’s kinda boring) or a side for 4-5 people.
Edit: (On a second trip I tried the pan fried kung pao chicken dumplings which I hated. Sooo, I can’t quite testify for the restaurant yet. It’s been a 50/50 success rate with their dumplings but I will update when I try more. )
I cannot wait to come visit this place in person when we are out of lockdown. Their Chinatown location always has a line and I can see why. If you are living in Melbourne or even just here for a weekend make this a priority. Youre welcome.
